Comet Resources Testing Springdale Graphite Market Suitability

THE DRILL SERGEANT: Comet Resources (ASX: CRL) has received results from ongoing test work on natural flake graphite from the company’s Springdale graphite project in Western Australia.

Comet Resources reported that both excellent grade and recoveries were achieved from initial tests, leading to commencement of work to produce a bulk sample for further testing.

The company explained that graphite concentrates previously produced had demonstrated a unique and potentially valuable characteristic in its small size distribution, with two-thirds of the product passing the 38-micron size fraction screen.

Generally, this small size fraction of graphite is a by-product of processing of larger flake fractions, which produces smaller size graphite, but in doing so also damages the smaller flake material in the process, reducing their performance and value.

Deposits, like Springdale could potentially be, that contain high quality ultra-fine graphite are uncommon and are potentially suitable for supplying the expanding battery anode market, which continues to grow as the sales of electric vehicles (EVs) increase.

Graphite suitable for battery anode production also achieves premium pricing in graphite markets, making it a highly sought-after product.

Once the bulk sample of Springdale graphite concentrate is produced it will be forwarded to a specialist lab in Germany where it will be assessed for, among other properties, the performance of the graphite during purification, micronisation and spheronisation.

These are the key steps for the processing of natural graphite products for EV battery anode specification markets.

Comet’s German lab partners will simulate these to test Springdale’s product suitability to meet industry standards in all these areas.

“The results of this ongoing test work will determine the suitability of the natural flake graphite from Springdale for use in the manufacture of battery anodes for electric vehicles,” Comet Resources managing director Matthew O’Kane said in the company’s ASX announcement.

“Earlier tests have demonstrated the graphite from Springdale is quite a rare product due to its very small flake size, which could make it ideally suited for anode production.

“This next stage of specialised testing will hopefully confirm this.”

Comet Resources Scores Further High Grade Drilling Results

THE DRILL SERGEANT: Comet Resources (ASX: CRL) announced further results from recent diamond drilling conducted at the company’s Springdale graphite project near Hopetoun in southern West Australia.

Comet Resources declared diamond drill hole HD022 had intersected up to:

16.95 metres at 16.55 per cent Total Graphitic Carbon (TGC) from 29.2m downhole, including 9m @ 26.88 per cent TGC from 30m.

The company said the drilling had encountered values up to 41 per cent TGC and that intends using the diamond drill core to provide bulk sample for upcoming priority metallurgical test work.

Comet said the results confirm excellent high-grade continuity of the North Zone graphite mineralisation.

“We have more, fantastic grades which confirm the continuity of our broad zones of high-grade graphite mineralisation in the fold-closure of the Northern Area,” Comet Resources CEO Philippa Leggat said in the company’s announcement to the Australian Securities Exchange.

“These results are pretty exciting when viewed in context of the electromagnetic survey data and the shallow, high-grade targets in the surrounding, fold closure.

“This drilling program is the first diamond drilling in the northern zone, assisting our understanding of the mineralisation, confirming the previous RC results and building towards a resource upgrade.”

The Resources Roadhouse interviewed Phillippa Leggat at the recent 2019 Brisbane Resources Round-up

Comet explained the recent diamond core drilling program has been designed to primarily provide bulk sample material for detailed metallurgical test work as well as provide geological, and structural information on the high-grade graphite mineralisation at the Northern and Western Resource areas.

Hole HD022 was completed on the western side of the North zone was targeted to both infill existing RC drilling on the section and to scissor earlier RC drill hole HR060.

The company considers Total Graphitic Carbon assays for both scissor holes at the intersection point to be very similar and confirm that there is good grade consistency between RC and diamond drill holes.

Comet Resources Scores High Results Graphite From Springdale Diamond Drilling

THE DRILL SERGEANT: Comet Resources (ASX: CRL) CEO Philippa Leggat provided some interesting insight to the latest results from the company’s Springdale graphite project in Western Australia at the 2019 Brisbane Resources Round-up.

Comet Resources had announcedhigh-grade results from the first hole of a recent diamond drilling program conducted at the company’s Springdale graphite project.

Comet Resources announced the first diamond drill hole targeting identified high-grade graphite mineralisation in the Northern Zone intersected 57 metres of high-grade graphite, from just 35.5 metres downhole.

Impressive assay results were returned from hole HD024 that was drilled at the easternmost end of the North zone, intersecting a wide high-grade graphite interval of:

57 metres at 22.38 per cent total graphitic carbon (TGC) from 35.5m using a 1 per cent TGC cut-off.

Comet said that graphite grades encountered throughout the zone were consistently high and that they clearly correlate with the massive graphite mineralisation observed in the core.

The company explained that hole HD024 had been designed as a PQ metallurgical angle scissor hole testing earlier-drilled vertical RC hole HR0126, which had intersected 46m at 12.16 per centTGC from 38m, including 17m at 19.9 per cent TGC from 51m.

The company observed that Total Graphitic Carbon assays for both holes at the intersection cross point are very similar, confirming good grade consistency between RC and diamond drill holes.

From core observations, Comet considers it is possible that HD024 has been drilled sub-parallel to the fold structure and is probably not reflective of expected true width of mineralisation.

“What wonderful results from the first diamond drill hole into the Northern Zone, especially considering how high the grade is over such a broad zone,” Comet Resources CEO Philippa Leggat exclaimed in the company’s announcement to the Australian Securities Exchange.

“It also reconfirmed the company’s strategy to focus on the shallow, high-grade mineralisation at Springdale.

“Diamond core from this hole is now in the metallurgical lab for characterisation and floatation testwork.

“From this work and over the coming weeks, we anticipate a series of important results relating to initial recoveries and flake distribution.

“On from that we will continue to optimise the results across a broader range of samples.

“This is an exciting time for Comet, with the balance of our drilling results to come and metallurgical results to follow, investors can expect great news flow over coming weeks and months.”

AMEC’s Overtures Result in WA Government Lithium Sector Review

IN THE LOBBY: The Western Australian lithium sector received a recent boost in the form of a supportive announcement from the State government.

Comet Resources Identifies Priority Graphite Targets

THE DRILL SERGEANT: Comet Resources (ASX: CRL) has had an aerial electromagnetic survey (EM) carried out over the company’s Springdale graphite project in southern West Australia.

Comet Resources said the survey had identified multiple high-conductivity graphite targets all within close proximity to the currently defined Springdale graphite JORC Resource.

The company has earmarked all as high-priority targets for drill testing.

Comet reported the EM survey had clearly defined the outline of the Springdale graphite JORC Resource while also identifying multiple conductive graphite bedrock anomalies as high amplitude responses in the late-time EM within the block 1 survey area.

These targets are close to the existing Resource as well as along, the now clearly defined, prospective stratigraphy in the wider licence area.

The block 1 survey area was flown over the main Springdale graphite project licence that hosts an Inferred Resource of 15.6 million tonnes at 6 per cent Total Graphitic Carbon (TGC), including a high-grade portion of 2.6 million tonnes at 17.5 per cent TGC.

The majority of defined resources are situated within 60 metres of surface.

Comet has interpreted the strength of the graphite conductor response in this area to reflect the relatively shallow, flat-dipping geometry of the high-grade graphite units that has been demonstrated by previous drilling, making them high priority targets for future drilling.

In addition to the targets in close proximity to the existing resources, the survey also delineated numerous new targets within the project licence the company considers to clearly reflect the folded geometry of the prospective target graphite stratigraphy.

“EM has again been demonstrated as a powerful tool for us to target shallow, high-grade graphite mineralisation, increasing the capital efficiency of our exploration,” Comet Resources CEO Philippa Leggat said in the company’s announcement to the Australian Securities Exchange.

“The priority targets closest to the shallow, high-grade areas of our existing Inferred Resources of 2.6 million tonnes at 17.5 per cent TGC is where we will focus.

“Our recent diamond drilling program centred around the fold closure in the northern area of the resource.

“The strength of the EM response in this area is interpreted to reflect the relatively shallow, flat-dipping geometry of the high-grade graphite units as seen in previous drilling.

“We are excited to see the new results as they become available over the coming weeks.”

Comet Resources Identifies Large Graphite Target

THE DRILL SERGEANT: Comet Resources (ASX: CRL) has identified a large, priority exploration target immediately to the north east of the company’s existing Springdale graphite resource in Western Australia.

Comet Resources believes the target could be a fold repeat of graphite-bearing stratigraphy that hosts the current high-grade Springdale resource that consists a defined Inferred Resource of 15.6 million tonnes at 6 per cent total graphitic carbon (TGC), including a high-grade portion of 2.6 million tonnes at 17.5 per cent TGC.

The company’s interpretation of a recent regional aeromagnetic survey identified a potential fold-repeat of graphite-bearing stratigraphy eight kilometres east-north-east of the defined resources.

The scale of the folding presents a target of approximately seven square kilometres.

The target sits in a similar, favourable fold-closure position to the one that already hosts the high-grade graphite resource.

Comet said its ability to target shallow, high-grade graphite mineralisation using electromagnetic surveys (EM) was confirmed during its February drilling campaign with the discovery of two new zones.

The company’s exploration to date has focussed on the fold closure of a northeast-southwest trending syncline.

Recent interpretation of the regional aeromagnetic survey has highlighted a potential fold-repeat of graphite-bearing stratigraphy to the east-north-east of the existing resource.

Comet plans to use EM as a high-grade targeting tool to test the newly identified area.

“We don’t yet know if we have found the highest-grade areas of graphite mineralisation at Springdale,” Comet Resources CEO Philippa Leggat said in the company’s announcement to the Australian Securities Exchange.

“The highest intercept of one metre at 48 per cent TGC was retuned in our February drilling program.

“The two new discoveries made in the program are outside the current resource and clearly confirmed the potential to use EM to target the high-grade zones near surface, and that is really quite exciting.

“We already have an Inferred Resource of 2.6 million tonnes at 17.5 per cent TGC on less than ten percent of our licence, mostly within 60 metres of surface, and this is before we look at the potential that a fold repeat could deliver.

“Moving forward, we see EM helping to identify the highest grade in new areas and around the existing resource, so that we can cost-effectively upgrade the high-grade component of our project.”

Comet Resources Discovers Two High-Grade Graphite Zones

THE DRILL SERGEANT: Comet Resources (ASX: CRL) announced discovery of two new, high-grade, graphite zones at the company’s 100 per cent-owned Springdale graphite project in Western Australia.

Comet Resources explained the new zones were discovered following a reconnaissance drill program targeting a series of electromagnetic (EM) anomalies along strike from a recently announced maiden Resource.

The company considers the two new graphite zones of some note as they host high-grade, near-surface mineralisation it believes has the potential to extend over several kilometres of strike.

The newly identified zones also confirm a strong correlation between high-grade graphite and the numerous EM anomalies identified by recent geophysical surveys.

High-grade intercepts include:

10 metres at 16.1 per cent total graphitic carbon (TGC) from 40m, including 7m at 21.6 per cent TGC; and

7m at 18.44 per cent TGC from 34m and 6m at 26.53 per cent TGC from 53m.

Comet suggested the discoveries suggest have potential to grow the current resource base with drilling confirming a strong correlation between EM anomalies and high-grade graphite horizons, improving future drill targeting.

“The shallow nature of the mineralisation in conjunction with the ability to use electromagnetic surveys to target high-grade mineralisation will aid our ability to cost-effectively increase the size of and certainty around our Resources,” Comet Resources CEO Philippa Leggat said in the company’s announcement to the Australian Securities Exchange.

“We are pleased with the new, high-grade discoveries and have Tony Cooper, my predecessor, to thank for his work in identifying the Springdale graphite project.

“He has developed a solid technical base for us to transition the project into the next stage of development.”
